HiSET (foremerly GED) preparation and testing are free! for Maine residents aged 17 and over. To get started, call our office to make a HiSET appointment. We will work with you to customize an approach that works best for you and your goals. A placement test is required to assess the best place to start.
Taking the HiSET exam can help change your life and expand your opportunities like it has done for so many other test takers!
HiSET requirements
There are five core subject areas within the HiSET. These are; Math, Science, Social Studies, Reading, and Writing. Telstar Adult Education will provide you with necessary tutoring to help you achieve your academic goals before taking the HiSET exams so you will feel confident on exam days.
Once you have taken a placement test, you will be set up with HiSet Academy; the online learning portion of HiSET. Working with this program will prepare you for the exams.
As you continue to make progress through HiSET Academy, the next step is to take a HiSET practice test. This is a requirement to take and pass before you will be eligible for the HiSET exam
HiSET Testing is done by appointment only at Telstar Adult Education. You must make an appointment for all exams. The five exams in the core subject areas can be taken in any order.
HiSET Testing and Scoring
Each of the core subject exams is scored individually. Each test has a maximum number of minutes allowed to complete.
For the Essay portion of the writing exam, students are scored from 1 to 6. All other exams are scored from 1 to 20.
To pass and achieve the HiSET, a minimum scaled score of 45 is necessary. For the essay, a score of 2 or above is required, as well as an 8 or above in the other four core subjects is needed to achieve your HiSET Diploma.
